Frequently Asked Questions

Should I learn Indian bansuri or Western concert flute? +

This depends entirely on your musical goals. Bansuri is the Indian bamboo flute used in Hindustani classical, Bollywood, and devotional music — it has a warmer, more breathy tone. The Western concert flute is used in Western classical, orchestral, and contemporary music. We teach both. Many students start with bansuri as it's easier to get a sound from initially.

What flute should I buy as a complete beginner? +

For bansuri, we recommend a G-scale concert bansuri as the starting instrument — widely available online and affordable. For Western flute, a student-level closed-hole silver-plated flute (brands like Jupiter, Yamaha, or Stagg) is suitable for the first 2–3 years. We advise on specific purchases before your first paid lesson.

Is flute difficult to learn compared to guitar or keyboard? +

Flute has a different initial challenge — producing a clear tone requires developing embouchure (lip position) and breath control, which takes 4–6 weeks of consistent practice. After this initial period, most students find steady progress. Flute is not inherently harder than other instruments; it has different early challenges.

Do you teach Carnatic flute as well as Hindustani? +

Our primary focus is Hindustani flute (bansuri) and Western concert flute. We cover basic Carnatic scale patterns on request, though dedicated Carnatic instruction would be better served by a specialist in that tradition. Please mention your preference when you contact us.

Can children learn flute, and from what age? +

We recommend starting flute from age 7 onwards, when children have sufficient lung capacity and lip muscle development to produce consistent tone. Below age 7, keyboard or ukulele are better-suited first instruments. From age 7, children progress remarkably well on flute with patient, play-based instruction.
